Is Wyckoff’s Curriculum Rigorous Enough? How Should Growth Be Measured?
We think the word rigor gets thrown around a lot in education, often without a shared understanding of what it actually means.
The more important question is whether our curriculum and instruction are reaching students across a wide range of abilities, interests, and learning styles.
When it comes to measuring meaningful growth, we would want to look at multiple indicators, not just a single test score. Of course we'd look at district assessment data, NJSLA trends, and student growth over time, but we'd also look at student work, participation in advanced learning opportunities, out of district placement trends, teacher's observations, and direct feedback from students and families.
Ultimately, we believe Wyckoff has a strong curriculum and outstanding educators. The goal should not be to make learning harder for the sake of being harder. The goal should be to ensure that every student is appropriately challenged, supported, and growing each year.
